Today we start our visit to Campo San Giacometto, an adorable square just a few steps from the world renowned Ponte Rialto and the Grand Canal. The Church is known for being the most ancient church in Venice, built in 421 A.C. Your tour guide will show you the local market where the locals buy fruits and fish along the Grand Canal.
We continue by foot and around the corner we reach Ponte Rialto. You will also have an opportunity to take romantic pictures of the breathtaking views of the Ponte Rialto. Taking its name from the near-by market, the bridge was initially built in 1250 completely in wood. The peculiar shape allows for the passing of tall boats. This is especially necessary next to the market for cargo boats to bring in the daily produce, meats and cheeses.
Next we will visit the small Church of San Giovanni Crisostomo with its beautiful altarwhich was built by Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini. In our tour we have an occasion to visit many periods of art and political history in the hidden alleys and canals. In fact, not many people know that Venice was also a center of Renaissance art. The Renaissance played an important role in the history of Venice.
We enter through the maze of Venice’s small alleyways before we reach one of Venice’s most fascinating squares: Campo Santa Maria Formosa. This unique zone has 11 bridges and numerous architectural masterpieces. Among these is Palazzo Querini Stampalia once home to the glorious Querini family.
